We’ve reported on this issue numerous times before, but here we are again. The drainage in Quarterlands Road (just at the access point to the proposed development) once again proved inadequate to cope with a heavy downpour yesterday and the resulting run-off led to a virtually impassable road. It is a reminder of the baseline we are starting with, which can only worsen with additional development in the area.
Local residents have been thorough in documenting the occurrences with photos and videos. The images below show the scene outside no 58 Quarterlands Road yesterday. This on a day of moderate to heavy rainfall, certainly far from the worst we can expect as winter sets in!

More building infrastructure means more concrete and the degradation of natural barriers such as fields, hedgerows and ditches that absorb excess water. It is essential that any building proposals include robust plans for mitigating the risk of flooding and for ensuring that the features of the natural environment that prevent flooding are either preserved or replaced in a thoughtful way, e.g., through the inclusion of permeable surfaces.
