We were sent these photos by a neighbour from the flooding last week 01.11.2023 and thought to share them as these issues need taken into account when thinking of building in these areas.
Last week, our community experienced a dramatic turn of events as torrential rain and subsequent flooding caused problems in homes that have rarely before been touched by rising waters. The unsettling images and videos captured during this flooding event serve as a stark warning of the far-reaching consequences of construction projects upstream.
The ongoing building work upstream has altered the natural flow of water in our area. As a result, rain events now force water to find new paths, impacting areas that have historically been spared from flooding. It’s a chilling testament to the interconnectedness of our environment and the delicate balance that, when disrupted, can have severe consequences downstream.
Across the country houses that once stood as steadfast havens have been inundated, leaving residents grappling with the aftermath of unexpected flooding. The alarming truth is that these incidents are not isolated; they are not one in one hundred year events, here it has only been 14 years. With the proposed building of a 55 bedroom hotel on this floodplain you can imagine how concerned residents are and how concerned people downstream should be too. These flooding events are not just natural they are the manifestation of a changing landscape, shaped by construction activities that demand our careful attention.
Images captured during the flooding event vividly portray the immediate impact on homes, roads, and the lives of our neighbors. The floodwaters, once a distant concern, have become an unwelcome visitor to communities that never anticipated such a threat.
It’s a call to action for increased awareness and collaboration between communities, local authorities, and construction projects. We must collectively recognize that the consequences of development extend far beyond the construction site itself. The water has to go somewhere, and we’re witnessing the repercussions in our own homes.
As we navigate the recovery process, we can’t forget the importance of understanding and mitigating the impact of upstream construction on our local ecosystems. Only through a concerted effort to balance development with environmental preservation and the needs of the communities can we hope to prevent such heartbreaking scenes from becoming a recurring chapter in our story.
This flood serves as a poignant reminder that the choices we make in our immediate surroundings can have lasting effects downstream physically and metaphorically. Let it be a catalyst for dialogue, action, and a renewed commitment to sustainable development that considers the broader impact on our shared environment the homes and the problems we build for future generations.
