A disturbing outflow of raw sewage into the River Lagan was documented by one of our residents just this week. Although the Quarterlands proposed development site is not directly beside the river, the Lagan is part of the wider eco-system we are trying to protect. When we contacted NI Water about our concerns, we were directed elsewhere. Below you can watch a video of the incident unfolding, see photos and read our letter which went to Jeffrey Donaldson, DUP MP for Lagan Valley, as well as a number of councillors and elected representatives with an interest in the Lagan Valley Regional Park AONB and SLNCI. Given the state of Lough Neagh none of us can afford to be disinterested.
Dear Jeffery,
I hope this email finds you well. Today, a local resident sent these to the Quarterlands Group. While walking along the Lagan River they captured some disturbing video https://vimeo.com/866844240 and pictures (enclosed) of significant sewage pollution in the waterway. This issue has further raised our serious concerns, especially in light of our ongoing discussions about the overburdened sewage system in this vicinity.
Given the urgency and gravity of the situation, we are eager to understand what steps are being taken to address this pollution problem and to prevent any further harm to the river, environment and the local community. It is crucial that we take immediate action to rectify this situation and ensure the long-term health of the Lagan River and the Lagan Valley Regional Park its surroundings.
Please, can you provide us with information on the actions that will be taken to mitigate this pollution and any plans in place to prevent similar incidents in the future? Your prompt response and commitment to addressing this issue are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Kind regards,
Lisa Catherwood
