Pine martens evident in area of proposed development site

Due to loss of habitat, these beautiful chocolate and cream animals are a rare sight in lowland UK and Ireland. Sadly, two pine martens have been spotted dead at the roadside adjacent to the proposed Quarterlands development site, however, it is exciting to see evidence that they living in the Lagan Valley Regional park.

The hedges in the area (at risk from the development) provide plentiful food for the prey of pine martens, so the loss of these hedgerows would be a further blow to the chances of protecting and, if we are lucky, catching a glimpse of these elusive endangered creatures.

More about this species (Martes martes)

“Shy, curious and playful. The pine marten is a stealthy, acrobatic hunter that relies on the cover of woods and trees for its foraging missions. It’s critically endangered in England and Wales as much of its woodland habitat has been lost.” (Woodland Trust)

If you do spot one, head over to Cedar (Centre for Environmental Data and Recording) to record it.
