Flooding on Quarterlands Road: LCCC’s Denial Defies Reality
As Quarterlands Road continues to be aware of escalating floods, the disbelief from residents grows. This past weekend, November 23-24, 2024, saw yet another round of flooding that stretched over 100 meters of the Quarterlands road, with water levels rising higher each time. The deluge rendered both traffic and pedestrian access difficult in places, leaving residents inconvenienced.
There was also flooding on the Hillhall and Ballyskeagh roads.
Yet, despite the overwhelming evidence—photographs, eye-witness reports, and the alerts of local residents—LCCC planners and councillors remain steadfast in their denial of the problem. They continue to assert that everything is “fine” and that further housing developments are safe for this already compromised area.
To make matters worse, this flooding isn’t just rainwater; it’s a mix of stormwater and sewage, spilling out from the full manholes as the combined drainage system struggles to cope. It’s an environmental disaster unfolding in real time, and yet LCCC seems blind to the dire implications.
When will the experiences of residents be taken seriously? When will the mounting visual evidence and firsthand accounts be enough to prompt action from those who hold the power to make change? It’s time to stop ignoring the facts, stop dismissing the clear and present dangers, and start addressing the flooding that is clear to residents on Quarterlands Road.
Until then, the community will continue to suffer—and face growing anxiety about the future, as climate makes further changes to our environment, the question remains: How many more floods, and how much more evidence, will it take for LCCC to listen?
